December 29: Endings & Beginnings (Burning Bowl/White Stone)

Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza, Assistant Pastor

This Sunday, we will hold our annual "Burning Bowl and White Stone Ceremonies."  As the calendar year comes to a close, we reflect on the year of 2013 and look ahead with great expectations to 2014.  As we look back, we release what no longer serves us in the burning bowl.  As we look ahead, we write down our intentions (our 'new name') for the new year on a white stone.  Come join us for these two powerful ceremonies. December 22: Celebrations of the Season & Spirit Space

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

December is a month of beginnings and transitions, the birth of Christianity as we know it, the beginning of Winter Solstice and Yule and the remembering of loved ones past and present.  Spirit Space will focus on two ceremonies celebrated during the month.  First, "The Light A Candle" and "Communion."  Both give honor to what was and what is.  Light a Candle for someone you love and experience the celebration of community, prosperity and life that a Spirit Space communion metaphorically represents.  Secondly, we will honor Winter Solstice and Yule.  There will be a time for each of us to express gratitudes for all that was, all that is and all to come.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

December 15: "The Gift of What Really Matters"

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

I has been said that 98% of the world's people focus on 98% of things that don't really matter (Neal Donald Walsche).  The gift we can all give and receive is the gift of knowing what really matters.  This Sunday, we can each decide for ourselves where we are in those statistics.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

December 8: "Gifts of the Spirit"

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

I Corinthians 12:7 says, "To each is giving the manifestations of the spirit for the common good."  Our Spirit Space community is such a beautiful demonstration of that wisdom.  Each person who finds their way to Spirit Space brings within their being a gift to be shared for "common good."  I would translate as "highest good."  This Reasoning will give all an opportunity to look more closely at this truth.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

December 1: The Perfect Gift

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Gift giving is such a big part of this season.  We have those who are near and dear to us that we want to express our love for by presenting them with the "perfect gift."  We are near and dear to God.  God wishes to express love to us.  What and how does God do that for you?  What is God's perfect gift? Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

Novwember 24: Celebration & Enjoyment

 Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

As we enter the Christmas season, we are called to celebrate with family, friends, traditions, winter soltice, Hannukah.  We are reminded of the gifts of laughter, love, freedom, peace and joy.  How can we be more mindful in our celebration of these gifts?  Mindfulness brings a sense of being fully present.  Only then can one truly ENJOY the Season. Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

November 17: "Anticipation"

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

The definition of anticipation is "a feeling of excitement about something that is going to happen" or "waiting eagerly for something you know is about to happen."  As told in the Christmas story, there was great anticipation around the news of a very special birth.  Pastor Sherry will be exploring the anticipation that we each carry within from Divine impregnation.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

November 3: Preparation

  • Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza
Our theme for the month is "P.E.A.C.E. for the Season." The first letter in our "P.E.A.C.E." acroynm is "P," which stands for Preparation.  As a mother prepares for the birth of a child, we prepare for the season with great expectations.  Spirit has prepared a banquet for us.  What's keeping you from responding with your R.S.V.P.?  Join us as we shift from preparing anxiously to preparing excitedly.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sal's Reasoning:

    October 27: "Sacred Laughter"

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

"Merry heart is good medicine, but a downcast spirit dries up the bones," says Proverbs 17:22.  Laughter can heal our spirit, too.  This Sunday, come with a funny (wholesome) joke to share.  We will be having our own Spirit Space Laugh In.  Come meet the Laughing Jesus and the Jovial Buddha.  You will start your week off filled with the joy of Spirit.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

    10-20-13 Sacred Life

Sacred living requires sacred practices.  Sacred practices require something called discipline.  For most of us, discipline does not have a positive connotation.  Discipline comes from the root word "disciplina" meaning "to learn, to be a student."  Sacred Living is living life as a student.  Remember, we are all students in the school of life.  Welcome to Earth School 101.  Music by Jessica Fogle.

    October 13: Sacred Love

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

The mystic Sufi poet, Rumi, wrote, "O, lovers!  The religion of the love of God is not found is Islam alone.  In the realm of love, there is neither belief, nor unbelief."  All religions teach of the love of God.  They also teach us to love one another.  We have an abundance of religions in the world teaching love.  Should we not, therefore, have an abundance of love in the world?  "Don't need no doctor, don't need no pills.  I got a cure for the country ills," sings Sting in the song, "Sacred Love." Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

    October 6: Sacred Listening

    Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

On her final show, Oprah Winfrey remarked, ""I've talked to nearly 30,000 people on this show, and all 30,000 had one thing in common: They all wanted validation. Every single person you will ever meet shares that common desire. They want to know: 'Do you hear me? Does what I say mean anything to you?'"  Sacred Listening is learning to be present enough to really hear one another.  Listening is an active part of communion with God and with one another.  In this Reasoning, you will discover what mystics from a variety of faith traditions have taught about becoming more attuned to the voice of the Divine which lives within all of us.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sal's Reasoning:

September 29: The Will & Grace of Balance

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Julia Cameron wrote, "I am a believer who is trying one more time to believe.  I want there to be more assurance than I currently feel.  I want to know we are on the right path.  By 'we,' I mean God and me."  I have resonated with those statements many times on my life's journey to my soul's evolutionary destination.  Doubt can be the shadow of faith.  Unbalance leads us into the valley of fear and doubt.  Faith brings us out on the other side.  Many times, we create a story that is so out of balance, we can then feel lost.  The story is the fictional story of balance.  Join us for the true story of Balance.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

September 22: Balancing Humanity & Divinity

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Ernest Holmes, founder of Science of Mind, said, "The manifest universe is the result of the Self-Contemplation of God.  Man's world of affairs is the result of his self-contemplation."  Understanding the balance between Being and Doing or Being and Behaving is a central ingredient balancing Humanity and Divinity.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

September 15: Meditation & the Balanced Life

Reasoning by Assistant Pastor, Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

One of the most helpful practices for maintaining our Balance as we walk the tightrope of life is meditation, but what does a "meditative life" look like?  When most people think of meditation, they envision a yogi sitting in the lotus position chanting "Om," but the meditative life has many forms of expression. Come learn how to establish a meditative practice that works best for you. The Reasoning is followed by a guided meditation featuring the music of Jim Cooper. Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sal's Reasoning:

This is the video referred to in Pastor Sherry's September 8 Reasoning.

September 8: "No Pain, No Gain"

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

"No Pain, No Gain."  You all have heard this phrase many times.  Often, it is used in sporting circles.  No pain, no gain is another way to look at Balance.  Balance is about having the right amount of...not too much or too little.  Always know that establishing an equilibrium has moments of uncomfortableness.  Any contributor to a cause for highest-good, whether it be in the arts, spirituality, freedom and human rights, corporate or financial success, knows there is always a price for this honor.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

September 1: What Makes Life Balanced?

Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel                                                                                                                                                                                              Pastor Sherry will be introducing the idea of balance in our lives and in the world. Without the right amount of balance, one could fall off a bike, or even fall off the tightrope that we walk every day.  Without a balance in our checkbook of life, we could end up with overdrafts.  And just what does an overdraft in life look like?  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

August 25: Different Perspectives That Changed the World

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Our world has forever been changed because of men and women who were willing to take on a different perspective. When we are willing to see things differently, things become different. There are those we know by name and there are those that were behind the scenes, rocking the cradle, creating the space for change to occur. We all have the potential to make a difference. What could hold us back is a limited perspective of ourselves, others, God. This Reasoning will encourage and inspire us to be the best version of our highest vision. It's All a matter of perspective. Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

     The Perspective of Viktor Frankl
    (Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza)
Viktor Frankl survived the Auchwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust, though his wife, brother and parents did not.  During his years in captivity, Frankl did not go to a place of fear. Rather, he learned to transcend suffering by changing his perspective. In his book on his experiences at Auchwitz (entitled Man's Search for Meaning), Frankl writes, "When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." July 28: Life, Liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness

    Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

July is the month in which Americans celebrate our Independence.  The World English Dictionary defines the word "liberty" as "the power of choosing and thinking for oneself."  How does this apply to our Spiritual Liberation?  Rev. Michael Beckwith says that Spiritual Liberation is "unlocking the capacity within us to set us free to become more ourselves."  Come learn these unlocking mechanisms and discover the keys to becoming spiritually free.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sal's Reasoning:

July 21: Living in the Now

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

The foresight of our founding fathers taught us that what we do and create NOW will affect the future, not just our future but the future of all who will come after us.  Freedom comes from living in the present moment in more ways than one can imagine.  Pastor Sherry will go deeper into the ancient concept of Living in the Now.  We will be looking at this wisdom from a little different perspective.  Come learn how living in the now creates freedom that affects the future.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

    July 7: DREAMS

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

"He who looks from the outside, dreams. He who looks from the inside, AWAKENS," wrote Dr. Carl Jung.  Pastor Sherry will interface our night time dreams and their meaning and purpose with our personal and spiritual dreams.  Both are needed to shine a conscious light on what would bring us freedom.  This freedom and light frees others, too.  Just as America has done for two hundred and thirty-seven years.  Today, we will also be celebrating the freedom of the dream for ALL citizens with the Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage in California and the end of DOMA.  A new take on Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech will be part of the celebration.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

    Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

May 26: When to Stand Up, When to Sit Down...

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Our world is in a shift that is shaking us to our very core.  Even Mother Earth is quivering and rumbling.  Memorial Day is one way we honor our veterans.  Yet, we all are veterans of a challenging, sometimes scary, place called life.  In Thich Nhat Hanh's book, Fear: Essential Wisdom for Getting Through the Storm, he writes, "Rooted in the moment, we have the capacity to restore balance and happiness..."  Knowing when we need to stand up and when to sit down, when to speak up and when to shut up helps.  Balance.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

May 19: What Woud You Do If You Were Brave?

    Reasoning by Rev. Salvatore Sapienza

New Thought singer/songwriter, Jana Stansfield, has a wonderful song entitled, "What Would You Do If You Were Brave?"  What if there were no boundaries and you could do or be anything?  What does your heart call you do be? One of the biggest reasons why people don’t achieve their goals is fear. Fear causes people to think small so that there’s a lesser chance of being disappointed. If you knew you could not fail, what would you attempt to accomplish? What fears are you letting hold you back from your dreams?  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sal's Reasoning:

Reasons to Go Within (for Wednesday Night Discussion):

    1. What "A-ha!" moments did you have from Sunday's Reasoning?

    2. Mark Twain said, "Courage isn't the absence of fear.  It's the mastery of fear."  What do you think of this statement?  What effective ways have you found for mastering fear in your own life?

    3. Neal Donald Walsch writes that F.E.A.R. is acronym for "False Evidence Appearing Real."  What do you think of this idea?  Can you find some "false evidence" in your own thinking?

    4. The song, "If I Were Brave," asks the question: "What step would I take today if I were brave?"   What small step will you take today (or this week)?

May 12: Random Acts of Courage

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Things that you never have attached the word "courage" to will become a "light unto your path."  Ernest Hemingway said, "Courage is grace under pressure."  What is your definition of being courageous?  What if courage was something as simple as loving?  "Being deeply loved by someone give you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage," wrote Lao Tzu.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

"Inside each of us is a beautiful flower garden.  This is the garden of the soul.  With each lesson we learn, our individual gardens form a more tranquil paradise." (Sri Chinmoy).  As with any garden, our spiritual garden must be cultivated, cared for, weeded and nourished.  Remember the nursery rhyme, "Mary, Mary, quite contratry, how does your garden grow?"  Join us for some weeding and some nurturing to form a more tranquil paradise within.   Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's Reasoning:

April 14: "Cleaning Out Your Closet"

Reasoning by Assistant Pastor Salvatore Sapienza

Spring Cleaning is a great time to clean out your closets, getting rid of things that you've outgrown, have gone out of style, or that just don't fit you anymore. It's also a great time to do some spiritual cleaning of our mental closets, getting rid of thoughts that no longer serve us or mindsets that just don't fit us anymore, so we can make more room for the new. Come learn how to clear your clutter and make space for your new wardrobe. "Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. March 17: The Hero's Journey

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel
In his book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell speaks of the mythological journey of the hero. To complete the evolutionary soul journey here on earth school, we must have a hero's heart. Jesus, Buddha, Dr. Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Mother Theresa and Saint Patrick all possessed a hero/shero's heart. We all have hero's heart. We are all super-heroes! March 10: What Seek Ye?

    Reasoning by Pastor Sherry Petro-Surdel

Every person has their own uniqueness. We come in different sizes, shapes, colors. We have diverse personality traits. The same is true when it comes to our connection with God. There is no "One Size Fits All" when it comes to how we relate and connect to our spirituality. Our personality plays a big role in this connection. The God we seek is usually the God we find. Jesus' question was "What Seek Ye?" Sherry will be integrating personality profiles with our spirituality profile.  Click the link below to listen to and/or download Sherry's reasoning:
